The Power of Words
Starting Each Day With A Little Thinking...Step
One foot, two foot. Red foot, blue foot. One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind….
Until we actually place one foot in front of the other – be it physically or metaphorically – we never actually get anywhere. The challenge then is taking that first step. Normally it’s one of the three evil henchmen — fear, uncertainty, and doubt — that stand in the way (for the ambitious reader do a search on the blog and you’ll find an individual post about each of the three henchmen). Ultimately it comes down to an issue of pain. Is the pain of your current state great enough that you’re willing to face fear, uncertainty and doubt with that first step? Or would you prefer to remain mired in your current state of discomfort?
I’d offer this: low-grade, prolonged discomfort eventually becomes tolerable. However, it doesn’t change the fact that this pain is a symptom of some bigger issue. You’re welcome to tolerate the symptom, but it’s very likely that whatever “disease” is causing the pain is not getting any better. And with each passing day it’ll likely be harder to cure that disease.
With that in mind:
Why not take the first step away from the pain that’s tormenting you?
As always, thanks for the time.
Behave
This AM I looked up the origin of one of my favorite sayings:
- Well-behaved women seldom make history – Laurel Thatcher Ulrich (1976)
Now at the risk of offending either my female friends and/or Ms. Ulrich, I’m going to suggest that the correlation between “absence of behavior” and “making an impact” is not solely confined to the female gender.
The reality is people get really uncomfortable when you deviate from the social norms. When you misbehave. As a rule we don’t like to be in uncomfortable situations. So we behave. But how in the world are you ever going to make a lasting impression — make history — if you confine yourself to the “normal” behaviors? You’re not. If you want to have an impact you’re going to need to step forward, stand out, and deal with the naysayers. Good news though. The naysayers normally are not a very hearty bunch and they back down easily.
Ultimately it’s up to you. Sit there quietly as a good little boy or girl should do. Or act out on those things that you know are important and have the potential to make an impact. The choice is 100% yours.
With that in mind:
How are you going to misbehave today?
As always, thanks for the time.
Amplify
I’m a firm believer in the power each of us has inherently. Frankly I don’t know how anyone can doubt the ability each and every human being has to do incredible things — look around you and you will se examples of these abilities each and every day. But to make a real impact you need to amplify that power. You need to over come your fear that you’ll be ostracized, scorned, or ridiculed for your ideas. You need to step forward and push for that idea the you have.
If you don’t that little voice inside is never going to resonate with anyone else. It’s never going to rise above the drone of the day-to-day challenges folks here. It’s never going to motivate the change that is possible. It’s never going to help someone learn, grow, and live better.
With that in mind:
Why aren’t you turning up the power on your inner voices amplifier?
As always, thanks for the time.
Enthusiasm
No, I’m not going to talk about the “bubbly school girl” sort of enthusiasm — that’s just plain annoying! However, I’m guessing that most of us have someone(s) in their life that is always upbeat, always on, always seeing the bright side of things. They’re just one of those nice people. And you like to be around them. And everyone else likes to be around them. And they always seem to get things done. And they’re genuinely happy.
Tell me again, why you don’t think enthusiasm is important?
Folks, it’s not that hard. Each day we wake up and make a choice on how we’ll face the world today. Some are going to choose to be miserable SOBs. Too bad for them. Others are going to choose to pursue the day with enthusiasm and energy. They’re going to have a great day no matter what challenges surface on the journey. To me, the choice seems pretty obvious….
With that in mind:
When was the last time you displayed some serious enthusiasm?
As always, thanks for the time.
