The Power of Words

Starting Each Day With A Little Thinking...

Liberty

Some times we take things a bit too much for granted.  Liberty’s probably at the top of that list.
We take for granted that our property rights exist.  We take for granted that (most) of our fellow citizens will follow the rules of law.  We take for granted our rights to speak, assemble, and worship as we choose.  Many people in the world don’t have these liberties.  We do because others before us made the necessary sacrifices to give us these gifts.
So the next time you start to whimper about what a rough life you have, consider those less fortunate in the world who aren’t living in a nation founded on the principles of liberty.
With that in mind:
Do you appreciate the liberty we have?

As always, thanks for the time.

Offer

Every day we interact with multiple other individuals.  Each of these situations presents us with opportunities to exchange “offers”.  Some of these offers are made to others:
  • Can I help you?
  • Would you be interested in?
  • How about if we do ….?

Other “offers” are made to ourselves:

  • Should I exercise?
  • Should I eat that?
  • Should I spend that?
  • Should I do that?
In my opinion, the course of our life is shaped by the offers that we extend to either others our ourselves.  While we can’t always control whether the offer is accepted, if the offers hold out hope or promise, they are more often than not embraced.
With that in mind:
What’s your offer?

As always, thanks for the time.

Consume

Words have always fascinated me.  There’s actually a poem I wrote way back when I was something like ten years old entitled “Words”.  And don’t waste your time Googling that one as it’s NOT published!

Today the word “consume” jumped to the front of my mind.  Three possibilities here:
  • To fully use or utilize — “He consumed the bag of popcorn”
  • To do away with completely — “Fire consumed the house”
  • To become totally occupied by — “The idea consumed her”
Most of us would probably agree that we are “consumers”.  Re-read the definitions above and think about the fact that you probably just acknowledged you are a consumer.  Do any of these definitions really define the person you want to be?  It’s an interesting question that came to my mind — especially in light of us being in the Holiday season.  Kind of makes you wonder what the focus is versus what the focus should be.
With that in mind:
What kind of consumer do you want to be?

As always, thanks for the time.

Ideal

A job we love, the perfect house, a nice car, no financial worries.  We all understand the ideal.  Or do we?

It’s easy to dream about the ideal situation; however, often when we get to the state that we desire, we find it’s not so ideal after all.  That’s because all too often we’re looking externally for our ideal.  In reality, ideal is only defined by our own psyche and not others.  When there’s misalignment between the ideal that others paint and our own value system, achieving the “desired” end state results in discomfort.  So while the job, house, car and dollars are nice; they may not bring you the satisfaction you’re looking for if the faith, friends, family, and fitness aren’t their at the same time.

So before you pursue that next ideal state, you might want to consider whether you’re pursuing it for you or for someone else.

With that in mind:

Whose ideal is it — yours or theirs?

As always, thanks for the time.
