The Power of Words

Starting Each Day With A Little Thinking...

Endorsement

Part of my daily AM routine is to read some motivational information from different folks.  One of my favorites is Seth Godin.  He always shares a simple idea and tries to drive you to some sort of action.  While I’m not at his level (yet!), I ‘ve definitely learned a ton from him and look forward to reading his daily tidbit.
Today for the first time in the year that I’ve been following him, he offered his endorsement for a product.  In fact, it’s actually a simple, on-line course that he’s teaching.  There was NOT any price shown.  It didn’t matter.  I went to the link to check it out, saw the content was great, and added it to the cart WITHOUT looking at the price.  Now it turns out that the course is not expensive at all; however, that’s not the point that I’m trying to illustrate.
By providing me with incredible value over a long period of time, Seth’s locked me in as his customer.  The fact that he’s not selling me anything most of the time is irrelevant.  He’s got me.  And, in all likelihood, he’ll be pushing some sort of an upsell to me AFTER I finish the course, AFTER it delivers incredible value.
The best endorsement any of us can provide is to deliver incredible value to others.  That’s a good thought to start 2014…
With that in mind:
Does your work serve as your endorsement?

As always, thanks for the time.

Light

Some concepts are universal.  They span time and culture.  Light and dark,  good and evil live at the top of this list.  Today I’m going to focus a bit on light.
Sometimes despite all of our best efforts and intentions, it’s difficult to find our way.  The next step seems too hard.  We’re not sure in what direction you should take that step.  And then we notice it.  A small glimmer of light.  A spark of an idea.  As we focus your minds the spark turns to a flame at the end of a match stick, then a small fire producing light adequate to see, then it grows to heat source that surrounds us, and finally it becomes an all consuming inferno.  When we get to this point, it’s not hard at all to take a step.  In fact, we’ve taken the steps willingly and are now surrounded by our passion.
We all struggle to find that initial spark.  That’s normal.  It’s also normal that some things that were once infernos are now nothing more than a small glint of light.  Ultimately each one of us has to decide which light source we can and will pursue.  It can be a new source of light or an old light that has dimmed.  There’s no “right” or “magic” answer.  However, we HAVE to pursue a light source.  If we don’t, the only alternative is darkness.  And that’s not a very welcoming place.
With that in mind:
What’s your guiding light?

As always, thanks for the time.

Again

After a few days off with time to reflect, you decide what you do and what you do not want to do.   You decide if you should begin again.
Some times the time to reflect leads you to the conclusion that you were on the wrong path.  That you need to “begin again” on a new path.  Sometimes you decide that you had it right in the first place and that it’s time to “begin again” on your chosen path.  In either case, the key steps are (i) making the decision and (ii) starting on the path — whether it’s new or well traveled.
Hopefully you are spending a bit of time now on the first decision so that you can start the New Year with forward motion on the path.
With that in mind:
Is it time to begin again?

As always, thanks for the time.

Do

For me the hardest thing is figuring our what I want to do.  Once I get that question answered, things fall in place fairly quickly.  That speaks to two things:
  • First, the challenge we all face in determining what really matters.  Or put another way, “what do I want to do when I grow up”.
  • Second, the power of momentum.  Once we get going on any path — good or bad — it’s pretty easy to stay the course.
That’s why it’s so important to have a vision of the future in mind AND to trust that by doing just a few little things each day, that vision will over time become a reality.  Nike has if right, the key is to “Just do It”.

What do you want to do?
