The Power of Words

Starting Each Day With A Little Thinking...

Leap

Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith.  You need to step off the platform, trust in yourself, and trust that there will be a safety net there if things don’t go quite so well.  And yes, it IS scary….

The fear is natural.  We didn’t survive for tens of thousands of years by ignoring that hair that stands up on the back of our neck.  However, we also didn’t progress by huddling at the back of a cave and never venturing out to see what lies beyond our immediate vision.  Personal growth requires that you get out of your comfort zone.  It requires that you try something new.  It requires that you fail.  It requires that you persevere.  But if you do step out of the comfort zone, try something new, fail, and persevere, things normally work out extremely well.

Ultimately it’s up to each one of us to decide how far we reach and how big of a leap we make.  Ultimately, we’ll each look back and wonder.  Likely not about the leaps we took, but about the ones we did not.

With that in mind:

  • Isn’t it time you took the leap?

As always, thanks for the time.

Compare

One of the most famous sayings is “to err is human, to forgive divine”.  And perhaps the biggest err we make is when we seek to compare (apologies for the poor attempt at working a rhyme in here as well!).

It’s all too easy to look at our neighbor and think “I wish I had” or “I’m not as”.   That’s such a huge mistake.  And yes, I AM passing judgement.  I’m passing judgement that each of us has our own skills, talent, blessings, and gifts.  I’m passing judgement that to compare to others versus looking at how fortunate we are, IS a mistake.

Each and every one of you reading this has your own unique set of experiences.  They define you.  They give you strength.  They let you live your own unique life.  And that’s a gift that we take for granted all too much.  If you decide to ignore my guidance and “dare to compare”, do me a favor.  Step back for a second and think about how fortunate you are compared to the 7 BILLION other people on this earth.  Think about the plight of folks in impoverished areas.  Think about the challenge folks face in countries ripped apart by war.  Think about those that live under oppressive leaders.  When you get done with that “compare” exercise I’m guessing that your situation won’t seem quite as dire when you go back to comparing yourself to your immediate neighbor.

With that in mind:

  • Is it really worth your effort to compare?

As always, thanks for the time.

Persistent

Stick-to-it-ivinis.  OK, so it’s not a real word.  But…. it does work as a great lead in to the importance of persistence.  Edison captured the essence of the issue of persistence very well:

  • Genius is one percent inspiration and 99% perspiration.

Sure you have to have a good idea AND a desired direction when you start a new journey.  But the ultimate success is not based on the genius of the idea.  It’s based on the stick-to-it-ivinis of persistence.  You WILL hit barriers.  You WILL get tired.  You WILL hear from the naysayers.  You WILL have doubts.  It’s your ability to persevere through these challenges that will determine whether or not you achieve your goal.

So the next time you run up against one of those barriers, step back, think about Edison, remember that the barrier IS normal, and punch through.  Yeah it’s going to be a bit painful.  But imagine how painful it will be if you DON’T stick to it.  It’s all about my favorite quote from Mr. Rohn:

  • We must deal with one of two pains.  The pain of discipline or the pain of regret.
With that in mind:

  • Doesn’t the objective at hand warrant you being persistent?

As always, thanks for the time.

Momentum

You all remember Newton’s first law of motion “An object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by some force”, correct?  Even if your memories from physics are a bit weak (or terrifying!), my guess is that you DO recognize the power of momentum.  And Mr. Newton provides us with an insight that is invaluable….

Once we get in to a habit, we keep at it.  Notice I didn’t say whether the habit was good OR bad.  Just that we keep at it.  It could be that we spend time reflecting daily, we exercise regularly, we save consistently.  Or it could be that we smoke, we yell at the kids, or we waste time on activities that don’t help us learn, grow, or live more fullly.

Enter Mr. Newton:

  • UNLESS ACTED UPON BY SOME FORCE
To build a new habit, WE have to exert that force.  However, once we exert even the smallest force, we begin to reshape the habit.  Further, if we continue to apply that new force, the momentum builds in a new direction.  Now mind you, the new habit is not going to emerge overnight.  Further, there’s going to be conflicting forces that slow the momentum.  The key here is that it’s the forces NOT the habit that make a difference.  The habit is the output.  The forces or actions are what build the habit.  And small actions can have a big impact:

With that in mind:

  • What force will you apply to build momentum along the path you want to travel?

As always, thanks for the time.
